We met like parallel lines,
distant and unfeeling,
yet there was an errant string binding us.
I had my opinions, he had his methods
until the lines slowly blurred
and we birthed a love that made everything else fade:
safe, patient, kind, solid and real
but I tried to hold the lines apart.
They were loud reminders that
what we shared had no name, no label.
It was a love that would break all the rules.
He was idiosyncratic
and I found that I was too much of a conformist.
So I left, I ran.
He pursued me, intent on emboldening me too,
but I had mastered the art of flight,
choosing acceptance over our love.
Now, I watch our feet move in tandem,
his strides slightly longer than mine.
Then he pauses and turns around
with a hand reaching out to me.
”Ifedunni, come,” he says.
I take a deep breath and walk past him,
willing my mind not to dwell on the pain in his eyes.
