It wasn’t long ago
It wasn’t so long ago,
that elders were respected.
It wasn’t long ago when wrongs were regretted.
People were human and they wore their hearts on their sleeves.
Your neighbor’s welfare was your concern and when they cut you bled.
A hot meal was sacred and something meant to be shared, it wasn’t so long ago.
It wasn’t so long ago when my child, was your child and everyone gave an eye, we were always concerned, and we lament when the whole community was disturbed.
It wasn’t long ago when elders were respected and everyone showed it, whether we meet them on the road or they are shut at home, respect was always due.
It wasn’t long ago when indiscretions were shunned and transgressors held in disdain, now it’s a badge to be a felon and the protectors are routinely chastised.
It wasn’t long ago life’s weirdest mysteries could be solved and the greatest conflict resolved.
Without bloodshed and strife and the loss of life.
It wasn’t long ago.
They call it the good old days which many ridicule and the appreciation diluted.
It wasn’t long ago.
It wasn’t long ago when little boys got a toy gun for Christmas but the lure soon faded and it lost its appeal.
It wasn’t long ago.
The milestone of life
Life as we know it is forbidden
Endangered
And slowly eroding
Life’s gains trampled:
Going out
Walking out
Eating out
Civilized but afraid
Stifled and baked
Oven baked
Castle transformed
Prison is born
Sentenced
By miscreant
Without an appeal
Prisoners
Afraid
Forbidden
Dare not
Venture
Adventure abort
Surely
This was not what Life was meant to be.
How could a spirit
Created free
Be so denied
So boxed in
So afraid
So afraid
So boxed in
So deny
So eaten away.
